Parent Involvement in Schools Linked to Improved Academic Outcomes

Parent Power coverA new EdSource report, The Power of Parents, produced in collaboration with New America Media, reviews compelling research showing that parent involvement in their children's school is associated with a range of positive outcomes for students, such as greater academic success, improved attitudes toward school, and a reduction in at-risk behavior. The research also shows that parent involvement is correlated with more teacher satisfaction.

California's recent reforms of the state's school financing system gives parents and communities a stronger voice--and greater responsibility--in dictating how state education dollars are spent. Under the new law, parent participation is also one of eight "priority areas" identified by the state, and schools will be assessed as to how successful they are in working with parents.

This report distills the voluminous research on the impact of parent involvement into an easy-to-understand summary presented in the context of California's new school finance system and how school districts can better involve parents.
