Will 2014 Be The Year Of "Full On Revolt" Against Standardized Testing?

OMG Wait 'til they Read Diane's New Book!

I'm quoted in an AP article published yesterday about the momentum behind the opt-out movement.
Darcie Cimarusti of Highland Park, N.J., didn't like that her twin daughters would have to agonize over a standardized test as first-graders so she worked out an agreement with the principal to move them into a kindergarten class during testing time.
"My goal is that my daughters never take a standardized test," Cimarusti said. "I see less and less value in it educationally and it being used more and more to beat teachers over the head."
I am personally incensed by the NJDOE comment about any parent's decision to opt their child(ren) out of standardized testing.
Michael Yaple, a spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Education, said about 98 percent of New Jersey students take standardized tests.
"Keeping a child home from testing does no favor to the child or the school," he said.
Instead of subjecting my daughters to 7-8 hours of testing over the course of three days at the age of SIX I instead chose to have them read, write, sing, make art and dance with their peers in a joyous classroom setting with a fabulous teacher.

I joined the class the first two days to ease their transition, and got to help with a classroom art project. Part of that project hangs proudly on our wall to this day. If my daughters had taken the test, what would their take away have been? I'd still be waiting for test results that would mean very

15 Reasons Reformers Are Looking to Finland

(Mensaje se repite en Español)
With schools failing, poor test scores, and dwindling budgets, there's no doubt that the American education system is in need of reform, but how to go about doing that has been, and undoubtedly will continue to be, a controversial issue among politicians, teachers, students, and parents alike. In recent years, programs like No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top have aimed at helping motivate teachers and communities to turn around schools, but unfortunately these reforms seem to have little lasting impact, with some claiming they've done more harm than good. So what can work to really reform American schools?
There is no easy answer, but many are looking to Finland

Somewhere In Syria, A Child Dreams Too

Aleppo, Syria - 08/12
Somewhere in Syria, a child dreams too.
On the eastern banks of the Mediterranean Sea, a child looks over the body of water and wonders the plausibility of reading while drones fly overhead in an undeclared war on a few. While airborne missiles whistle over the greyish sky, the child dreams of one day positioning him or herself in the position to make choices towards peace.
The contradictions abound. The student reasons that government is corrupt and treats innocent people as collateral, but does so in the name of solidarity and justice. Army drills and shrill cries interrupt morning prayers the way boots on the ground might. The television

Aligning Teacher Prep With Common Core State Standards - California Teachers Association

Aligning Teacher Prep With Common Core State Standards - California Teachers Association:

ALIGNING TEACHER PREP WITH COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) has made a series of changes to better align teacher preparation requirements with the demands of teaching the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
Specific changes in three key areas are outlined below, and more are expected in the coming months in further alignment to the new science standards, as well as reviewing Special Education Teaching Performance Expectations to ensure compatibility with the CCSS. The CCTC:
  • Adopted revised Subject Matter Requirements (SMFs) for the California Standards Examination for Teachers (CSET) in Multiple Subject, Single Subject English, and Single Subject Mathematics.
  • Adopted revised California Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs) so that they are aligned with the CCSS. Accredited colleges and universities design their teacher preparation programs so that credential candidates meet the expectations in the TPEs. The teaching performance assessment that every teacher-candidate has to pass before gaining their preliminary credential is also based on the TPEs. Full implementation of the TPEs is expected by 2014-15.
  • Clarified that induction programs must also use the CCSS as the definition of “standards of pupil performance.” Induction programs are charged with supporting new teachers’ professional skills in relation to pupil performance. Further, induction programs may provide CCSS professional development to beginning teachers to help strengthen a teacher’s ability to apply pedagogical skills beyond what may have been demonstrated for the preliminary credential. This clarification is designed to allow for the use of CCSS professional development funds to be used by induction programs.
