Is a half year of learning equivalent to one question on a multiple choice test? | Gary Rubinstein's Blog:

Is a half year of learning equivalent to one question on a multiple choice test?

I read an article yesterday about a new study which ‘proves’ how effective TFA teachers and TFA alumni teachers are.  The study, which can be accessed here, claimed that middle school math TFA corps members get an extra half year of learning than non-TFA novice teachers, that middle school reading TFA alumni get an extra half year of learning than non-TFA experienced teachers, and that middle school math TFA alumni get an extra full year of learning than do their non-TFA experienced teacher counterparts.
Anytime I see some educational program being measured in ‘months of learning’ I get nervous.  I just don’t think that learning is measured in months, and even if it were, I don’t think that a short multiple choice standardized test would be able to accurately measure it.
When I think of my own math teaching, my goal is to expose my students to as many ‘thought provoking’ questions each class as I can while still developing their skills.  Maybe on a good day, with the right subject matter, I can get four or five really good questions that get the students thinking deeply and analyzing what is

The U.S. Education System Is Not Failing | LFA: Join The Conversation - Public School Insights:

The U.S. Education System Is Not Failing

By Steve Berlin, Senior Communications Manager of the National Association of State Boards of Education(NASBE)
The American education system — inasmuch as it's actually a system — is not failing. For readers stunned by a phrase not often seen in print these days, I repeat: The U.S. education system is not failing. I know that's not a popular position these days, but it is the right one. There are indeed problems that need addressing, but there is significant cognitive dissonance in how the public views K-12 education.
So, why do I say our schools as a whole are succeeding? Well, why not start with what is meant by "failing?" The term is a relic that defines education policy and growth as all-or-nothing propositions. It can be easily traced to 1983's A Nation at Risk, which made "failing schools" a part of the American vernacular. But it was truly burned into headlines and our collective consciousness with the 2001 iteration of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, better known as No Child Left Behind — a law that uses all stick and no carrot as inducements for improvement, usually with the "failing" schools and districts that were struggling in the first place.
Worse, NCLB pointed to 2014 as the deadline for 100 percent proficiency. If schools, districts and states can't meet that deadline, well, they have failed. Doesn't matter that people are working hard to draft new policies and legislation, and devising new and

State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson Congratulates California
Teacher Chosen as National Online Teacher of the Year

SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today congratulated Renee Citlau, an online teacher at Cypress High School and a lead online teacher for the Anaheim Union High School District, for being named the 2013 National Online Teacher of the Year by the Southern Regional Education Board and the International Association for K-12 Online Learning.
"Renee clearly has the special set of skills educators need to engage their students in the relatively new and swiftly evolving world of online education," Torlakson said. "It's wonderful to have a California teacher recognized for her outstanding ability to help students thrive in this digital age."
As the National Online Teacher of the Year, Citlau will represent the online learning field at several events and professional conferences, sharing her expertise and insight with audiences across the country, according to the Southern Regional Education Board, which makes this award annually.
In support of online education, Torlakson unveiled in 2011 a new interactive California Directory of Online Schools and Programs designed to help people make more informed decisions about online kindergarten through grade twelve educational options throughout the state.
To access the California Directory of Online Schools and Programs, "A Glossary of Terms Related to Online Education," and "Frequently Asked Questions about Online Education in California," please visit the California Department of Education's Web site at Online Education Index - Taking Center Stage - Act II (TCSII).

New Mexico Early Education Bill: NM Could Become First State With Pre-School Funding Constitutionally Guaranteed:

New Mexico Early Education Bill: NM Could Become First State With Pre-School Funding Constitutionally Guaranteed

New Mexico is weighing a bill that could make it the country's first state to protect early education funding in its constitution.

For the last three years, New Mexico Senate majority leader Michael Sanchez (D) has introduced a bill that would let the state vote on a constitutional amendment to fund preschool by an additional $100 million annually. The money would come from an annual disbursement of 1 percent of New Mexico's Land Grant Permanent Fund, the country's second largest in-state land fund with more than $10 billion. The fund is treated as a rainy day fund, and the bill has a trigger that would stop the disbursement should the fund be significantly devalued.

In previous years, the bill was only introduced in the Senate, then locked up in the Senate's finance committee. But this year, the bill also was introduced in the House, which was expected to vote on the measure as soon as
