The UFT Elections are just around the corner, and the Movement of Rank and File Educators (MORE) is running in the elections!  We aim to to build a fighting, democratic union that vigorously defends public education.  Our current leadership squanders our union dues on bloated officer salaries, double pensions, and more.  They depend on back room dealing and compromises which have steadily eroded our working conditions and our students' learning conditions.  Instead we will funnel these squandered resources to mobilize the rank and file fight for a fair contract, against evaluations based on standardized test scores and for quality public education for all students.
Come join us for a discussion about the elections and how to build for MORE.

Opt Out of High Stakes Testing

Dear friends and colleagues,

Thank you once again for supporting the Massachusetts Statement Against High-Stakes Testing. We wanted you to know that on February 19th, we sent out this press release to the MA Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, as well as to state and national media outlets, education reporters, and blogs.  The media attention has been fantastic, including a story in the Boston Globe.  You can find a sampling of the coverage here.

With media and blog attention, we expect that the list will grow (note: we're up to 145 endorsers). If you can continue to spread the word among friends and colleagues, that will help us make the biggest statement possible and get the attention of those who can make the changes we seek.

And for those of you who haven't seen it yet, Ken Bernstein's "Warnings from the Trenches", a letter to college professors from a high school teacher, has caused quite a stir. We thought you might be interested.  Here's an article from Inside Higher Education about Bernstein's piece and the response he's gotten from professors around the country.

Since then, as you can see when you open the link, it has become a commonplace term. The School-to-Workforce Pipeline: At Least it isn’t Prison – @ the chalk face: Guest Post: Nichole Berg. “Is this really all there is?” by Timothy D. Slekar As a teacher in this new political climate of school reform, teacher-bashing, high stakes testing, and arbitrary merit pay, I frequently find myself wondering, “Is this really all there is? I mean, did I really spend all those years building my professional repertoire and meaningful relationships with kids just to have it all taken away and replaced with pacing guides and a barrage of initiatives and chores that occupy so much ... more »

Jersey Jazzman: Another Day; Another Reformy Smear!: Another Day; Another Reformy Smear! by Duke Good mroning, America! So, what are *you* going to do today for our nation's children? Me, I'll be destroying American society by indoctrinating the tykes in socialist rhetoric from my cushy, union-protected, ultra-high-paid job-for-life as a public school teacher! But maybe you'll spend your day nobly saving the kids from lazy and evil teachers like me! Public and expert opinion is being, and will continue to be, totally disregarded in this process. Sadly, this mindset isn’t just restricted to education, and as a resul... more »

Daily Kos: Is teaching an art or a science?: Is teaching an art or a science? by rss@dailykos.com (teacherken) The thoughts in this piece were occasioned by a conversation where i was asked if I thought teaching more of an art rather than a science. I responded that the question was a false frame, and was asked to explain. My explanation comes in part from my background and formal education in music. I think what we are seeing in education is neither art nor science, but the attempt to turn education into an engineering problem. In engineering, it is of course important to have ... more »
