Unions and charters are strange bedfellows | Gary Rubinstein's Blog

Unions and charters are strange bedfellows | Gary Rubinstein's Blog:

Unions and charters are strange bedfellows

When you ask the leader of an allegedly high performing charter school what makes them so successful, they generally say that they have more flexibility with hiring and firing since they are free from pesky union contracts.  This is why I found it quite odd that I received an announcement with job openings at a charter school called Green Dot High School the other day from the New York City teacher’s union, called the UFT.
It turns out that some charters do have teachers who are in the union.  I’m not sure how many charters are like this in New York City, but in addition to this Green Dot High School, there is actually one called ‘The UFT Charter School’ which, much to the glee of ‘reformers’ is one of the lowest rated schools in the city and nearly had its charter revoked recently, but has been given two years to shape up.
Anytime I see the name ‘UFT Charter School’ I chuckle a little as I imagine a Saturday Night Live skit about what must go on in this school:  The teachers all show up at exactly 7:52 AM and leave at 3:32 PM.  Nobody ever helps students on their ‘duty free’ lunch.  Everyone knows the contract by heart and anytime an administrator

Zimmer Irate Over Reform Coalition Attacks - LA School Report

Zimmer Irate Over Reform Coalition Attacks - LA School Report:

Zimmer Irate Over Reform Coalition Attacks

Zimmer, Villaraigosa, and Sullivan
It was perhaps no surprise that District 4 School Board member Steve Zimmer was visibly upset when he happened to run into Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s Deputy Mayor for Education, Joan Sullivan, at today’s United Way education event.
“RFK, Joan? Really?” said Zimmer as the two rode the escalator together. “That’s just wrong.”
“I don’t know what you want me to say, Steve,” responded Sullivan.
The exchange, followed by harsh remarks from Mayor Villaraigosa about Zimmer later in the day, reveals just how antagonistic things have gotten between City Hall and the District 4 incumbent who was once considered something of an ally.

The bad blood between District 4 Board Member Steve Zimmer and Mayor Villaraigosa’s allies goes back to 2009, when Zimmer was endorsed by Villaraigosa in his initial race for School Board as part of a cease-fire with UTLA. The two men even stumped together, as you can see from this 2009 Daily Bruin clip.
But then Zimmer failed to show sufficient support for Villaraigosa’s views about school reform once he was in office. Four years later, Villaraigosa’s Coalition for School Reform has spent over $900,000 supporting District 4 challenger Kate Anderson and opposing Zimmer – much of it in the form of  television ads and direct mail flyers attacking Zimmer for laying off teachers and approving the construction of the $500 million Robert Kennedy School.
In total, over $1.7 million has been spent by the Coalition, SEIU and UTLA on the District 4 race alone, with more than $550,000 of it going to negative ads.
In an interview with LA School Report during the United Way event, Zimmer called the Coalition for School Reform’s negative ad campaign against him “morally reprehensible.”
“There are very legitimate things to come after me about,” Zimmer told LA School Report. “Layoffs shouldn’t be

SARASOTA COUNTY - Tuesday a judge ruled the principal of Imagine School in North Port could keep his job. However, it looks as though it will be a long fight over the future of the school.
Wednesday we talked to school board and legal experts who say the case moving forward may just impact the future of charter schools across the country.
The future of a local independent charter school and educating more than 1,000 children in it was in a court room this week. "It is not a healthy situation." The judge now suggesting the local school district get more involved. Sarasota County School Board member Caroline Zucker says it's a gray area. "There is no clear cut understanding of who owns what and who is responsible for what."
The fight between the Imagine parent company and the local governing board it appointed will likely continue through the court system. It may also have a bigger impact then just here. "I would expect charter schools and school districts nationwide would be watching this case very closely. Mark Zimmerman is a local attorney who specializes in education law. He says this is what can happen when you mix public funding and profits. "Ultimately this is a contract dispute involving a business entity. That is what is difficult about charter schools

Self-Contained Urban Boredom Apparatus | Gary Rubinstein's Blog: Self-Contained Urban Boredom Apparatus by Gary Rubinstein In November I visited the KIPP High School in New York City and summarized some of what I saw in a blog post. I’ve decided to write more about what I saw there in a series of shorter blog posts. In this one, I will describe what I saw in their special education classes. KIPP High in NYC has very small class sizes. Some of the classes seemed to have around twelve students in them. An administrator told me, when I asked about this, that the numbers were a lit... more »

Today, www.Code.org launches a short film with spokespeople from Bill Gates to Mark Zuckergberg, from rock stars to NBA all-stars, advocating for students to learn basic coding. Learning to code is the new literacy. It accelerates child development; it stimulates creativity and ... more »

A Tale of Two Open Letters | Gary Rubinstein's Blog: A Tale of Two Open Letters by Gary Rubinstein Wendy Kopp announced that she is stepping down as CEO of Teach For America, and around that time on The Huffington Post, a TFA alum named Kate Casas wrote an open letter to Wendy. This letter was in stark contrast to the one I wrote which I was pretty proud of and which actually got written about in The New York Times andThe Washington Post. In this letter, Casas complains that Wendy has not been ‘reformy’ enough: *During the eight years that I have been associated with Teach for Am... more »

The Dark Side of Teacher Leadership [Future of Teaching] | The Jose Vilson: The Dark Side of Teacher Leadership [Future of Teaching] by Jose Vilson I’m usually a fan of teacher leadership, but sometimes, it makes me nervous. Observe: I wonder if teachers who are deemed teacher leaders understand why so many of us put teacher in front of leader when speaking in front of teacher leadership. This falls on some of our colleagues too, who jump right into the teacher leadership role and misunderstand what comes with the title i.e. the perception that, yes, they will lead as teachers.... more »
