Oh no, the Illinois Legislature is poised to make the following reforms to the Illinois Teachers’ Pension System.  Active teachers will have to contribute 10% more from their paychecks. The minimum retirement age is raised to 70.  There will no longer be a cost of living increase for retirees.  A retirees pension amount will be based on the average salary of their first three years of teaching. Retired teachers will only receive a pension for the first 7 years after retiring.
How angry are you right now ?  Are you now ready to march down to Springfield and vent your anger upon the legislature ?  Are you ready to call for a massive teacher strike until all your previous pension rights are returned ?  Are you ready for a “teacher revolution” to begin on this Fourth of July ?
Relax, there is no such pension proposal in the Illinois Legislature.  I just wanted to see what it would take to get you really angry and riled up. How angry were you ? Sometimes I wonder what it would take for normally docile and peaceful teachers to actually take some drastic action and stand up for themselves.  On this patriotic day, we need to adopt the attitude of our Founding Fathers, and be willing to drop our peaceful nature and demand a just pension that was promised to us.
