TEACHERS AND CIVIL RIGHTS

The Presidential Inauguration and the Martin Luther King Jr. festivities are a good time to remind everyone of how the teachers in America have played a huge role in advancing civil rights in this country.
I strongly believe that the advancement in civil rights in this country would not have been possible without the efforts of the average teacher in America. The majority of teachers have been advocates for civil rights advancements and have used the classroom as a forum to advance the concept that all children and all people are indeed “created equally”.
Ultra conservative people in this country have often complained of a “liberal agenda” among teachers in this country and especially among university teachers. If the advancement of civil rights is one of the “liberal agendas” then I believe the teachers are guilty as charged.
