Teachers Take A Stand. Will You?

If you've noticed lately the tendency in car commercials to show the vehicle against a background of an empty city street, you can assume it's likely due to the abundance of empty city streets available in the place famous for being home to the major automotive companies -- Detroit.
While many of America's biggest cities are experiencing large influxes of new residents, Detroit stands in stark contrast, losing a staggering 25 percent of its population from 2000-2010.
During the day, the city's still-grand architectural feats are silent sentinels towering over sparsely populated sidewalks. At night, pockets of bright lights -- a constellation amidst a darkened cityscape -- mark the few destinations where families and revelers can come to dine, drink, and gamble.
Yet, it was amidst this twilight landscape that the American Federation Teachers chose to stage its annual convention.
When AFT decided to locate its meeting in Detroit -- likely some time ago -- they perhaps were ready for this landscape of vacant buildings and empty parking lots. But it's doubtful they anticipated they'd be descending into the epicenter of the most vicious attack, so far, on American public education.
Welcome To Detroit's Education New Normal
The Huffington Post's ever-useful Joy Resmovits has the necessary background on the situation in Detroit. But

The Gates Foundation Responds: How do we Build the Teaching Profession

Tough, complicated issues like education often don't get the kind of debate they deserve. People who disagree don't see where they have common ground. Each side isn't willing to concede that the other has a valid point of view. So it is especially gratifying that against this often vitriolic backdrop Anthony Cody was willing to come to the Gates Foundation and participate in a dialogue about our work and our shared concerns. Like him, we agree that the education debate often deteriorates to shouting past one another so we welcome the opportunity to engage in a public dialogue about some of the areas where we have common ground. Our goal here is to better understand the perspectives of those with whom we occasionally disagree and to more clearly state where we stand and where we simply just don't know the answers.
In his first blog in this series (also posted here on Impatient Optimists), Mr. Cody raised the issue of building the teaching profession. This is a goal we

Voucher schools include some teaching creationism

Updated 03:41 p.m., Monday, July 30, 2012

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Taxpayer dollars in Louisiana's new voucher program will be paying to send children to schools that teach creationism and reject evolution, promoting a religious doctrine that challenges the lessons central to public school science classrooms.
Several religious schools that will be educating taxpayer-subsidized students tout their creationist views. Some schools question whether the universe is more than a few thousand years old, openly defying reams of scientific evidence to the contrary.
Critics say it's inappropriate to spend public money on such religious teaching, arguing such programs undercut a strong science education and threaten the adequate preparation of students for college science courses.
"What they're going to be getting financed with public money is phony science. They're going to be getting religion instead of science," said Barbara Forrest, a founder of the

A Dialogue with the Gates Foundation: How Do We Build the Teaching Profession?

July 30, 2012
This post originally appears on Anthony Cody's blog, Living in Dialogue. It is the first post in a weekly series of posts, over the next five weeks, between teacher Anthony Cody, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Irvin Scott, Deputy Director in the College Ready program.
Two weeks ago I traveled to Seattle and spent most of the day meeting with leaders of the Gates Foundation, discussing their work around education reform. I have been critical of the impact their agenda has had, but they expressed an interest in opening up a dialogue. This blog post will be the first in a series of exchanges that will explore some of the key issues in education. We plan a process where we will take turns posting our perspective on a given theme, followed by a response from the other party. All posts will be carried here, and at the Gates Foundation's Impatient Optimists blog. We will ask everyone to join in a lively discussion. The education reform debate has deteriorated at times—our goal is to engage in a constructive conversation, to turn down the heat, and to seek a bit more light.
In the weeks to come we will get into some nitty gritty issues, such as what it means to "measure" teacher effectiveness? What is the role of poverty in relationship to education reform? What is the purpose of a k-12 education? And what role should the drive for profit play in our schools? But as our starting point, we are going to take a narrower focus, and tackle something a bit more concrete. This first exchange will focus on these questions: How can educators create a strong professional culture in our schools? How do we

OUSD: Changes in the principal’s office

Monday, July 30th, 2012 at 4:55 pm in No Comments
Here it is, your long-awaited account of who’s in and who’s out of various Oakland schools this year. From this 2012-13 directory, I count 15 new principals — seven at elementary schools, three at middle schools and five at high schools. Did I miss any?
This means that about 17 percent of OUSD’s 86 schools will have new leaders. Last year, if you recall, there were 20 new principals for 98 schools.
Two schools are also trying out the co-principal model — two people who share the job. Burckhalter Elementary School, which expects to take on dozens of children displaced from the shuttered Lakeview Elementary, will take on Lakeview’s former principal as well — along with its existing leader. Claremont Middle School, which has

Instead of worrying about applying the standards, we should be resisting them. To do this, we have to work together.

The Common Core Standards is a tsunami that will destroy all of us unless it is stopped. It is going to cost billions, bleeding money from where it is badly needed and it will soon impose what can only be described as an astonishing amount of testing. All this is happening under false pretenses. There is no evidence that our schools require these harsh measures, and plenty of evidence that they will not improve student achievement. There is plenty of evidence that the Common Core will further enrich the .01%, those whose only concern is profit:

Let me repeat: This will destroy all of us.

Professional groups, with the exception of NABE, have not opposed the standards. They have only been

NYC Educator: Good Day AFT: Good Day AFT by NYC Educator As Vice-President of the United States, I'm pleased to address all you teachers! I know you're here because you have a calling, a dedication to teach our kids. Otherwise, why would you be facing pay cuts, additional fees for pensions and health care, and be buying supplies out of pocket? When President Obama and I see the things Republicans are doing to you, we're horrified, and that's why we're out there every day, paying teachers valuable lip service. And let me assure you that, when and if President Obama finds his comfor... more »

School Reform: Why It’s So Hard | California Progress Report: School Reform: Why It’s So Hard by jeffson *By Peter Schrag* Listening to even the best people in California’s school reform discussions doesn’t leave much clarity about the direction our money-starved education system school go or much confidence that things will get perceptibly better any time soon. Many of those good people know what’s needed. It’s just that they don’t all know the same thing, or don’t know it at the same time. That much at least was apparent once again at last Wednesday’s Sacramento forum on school f... more »

The Educated Reporter: Girls and STEM Education: Still Waiting For Lift-Off: Girls and STEM Education: Still Waiting For Lift-Off by Emily Richmond When Sally Ride was preparing to become America’s first female astronaut, she had to field some particularly tough questions: Would she be packing a bra or menstrual supplies? Did she worry her reproductive organs might be damaged by space flight? Looking back at those interviews with Ride, who was 61 when she died July 23 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, the sexist tenor of the queries is almost comical. But as Ride was quoted... more »

ESCAPE FROM FLATNESS « educationalchemy: ESCAPE FROM FLATNESS Today I experienced what might be defined as the highlight of my twenty year professional education career. I met Maxine Greene; writer, philosopher and education activist extraordinaire. She is as brilliant, warm, and engaging as anyone might imagine. I was ushered into this personal introduction by Nick Sousanis; artist and scholar-an equally brilliant, warm and engaging individual. By the end of a day of sharing our individual and collective visions for the future of education, I arrived at my inspiration for t... more »

http://www.southbronxschool.com: It's a Far Cry by noreply@blogger.com (Bronx Teacher) This will be an interesting blog post, at least in my opinion, so please, be patient and read fully. At the end, you will have an "a-hah" moment. Today is Geddy Lee's (of Rush) 59th birthday. I made a special morning of it. A cup of coffee, a cupcake with a candle (hoping this time Geddy would stop by) and popping in Rush's latest concert film, "Time Machine 2011: Live In Cleveland." When I got to the last song (before the encore), my mind started to wonder. Far Cry is off 2007's Snakes and Arro... more »

Education’s biggest design flaw - The Answer Sheet - The Washington Post: Education’s biggest design flaw By Valerie Strauss This *was written by Marion Brady, veteran teacher, administrator, curriculum designer and author.* By Marion Brady I live on the west bank of the Indian River Lagoon on Florida’s East Coast. Across the Lagoon, in the distance, is Kennedy Space Center. For years, I walked out on my dock and watched space shuttle launches. On a clear, cold January day in 1986, a little before noon, the space shuttle Challenger lifted off the pad. Seventy-three seconds later it T... more »

Coalition Matters [featuring Bayard Rustin] | The Jose Vilson: Coalition Matters [featuring Bayard Rustin] by Jose Anytime you mention Bayard Rustin’s name as a hero, you’re good in my book. The mastermind behind the 1963 March on Washington, Rustin rarely gets mentioned by the general public as a civil rights leader, and only seems to come up whenever people (again, rarely) talk about LGBT issues in activist / POC communities. The conversation only gets uglier when people dilute his image for their own political purpose, exalting him to heights I’m confident even he would dissuad... more »

What’s Next for the Quebec Student Movement « Student Activism: What’s Next for the Quebec Student Movement by Angus Johnston The summer lull in this year’s Quebec student protests is coming to a close, and the next few weeks are likely to be crucial ones for the future of the movement. To recap: Quebec’s ruling Liberal Party announced plans for multi-year tuition hikes last February, prompting students to walk out of classes throughout the provinces. Those walkouts quickly developed into ongoing student strikes, with many campuses closing entirely after student strike votes at g... more »

School Tech Connect: This Isn't Naperville: This Isn't Naperville by noreply@blogger.com (Tim Furman) Just wanted to say that while knocking on doors for petition signatures to get an elected school board, I have now twice heard the expression, "This isn't Naperville." Someone must have said that in the press recently. Today I heard it in a free-ranging conversation with one signer; he was referring to one of the arguments against letting people vote for school board is that Chicago isn't Naperville. He was a great guy; we were just talking. Anyway, I'm still unpacking the remark ... more »
