Elk Grove teachers union to host education activist’s speech, Jan. 20

By Citizen staff
Published: Friday, January 13, 2012 2:35 PM PST
Diane Ravitch, a nationally renowned public education advocate, will be speaking at the Sacramento Convention Center on Jan. 20.

The Elk Grove Education Association, which represents teachers in the Elk Grove Unified School District, is hosting the event, “An Evening with Diane Ravitch.”

Ravitch wrote the book, The Death and Life of the Great American School System and she’s an outspoken critic of education reform activists like Michelle Rhee. She argues that Rhee’s approach subjects public education to “free market forces” and does not generate good education.

Teachers, parents, policy makers, school board members, students, and other community members are invited to attend the event that begins at 6 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased for $5 at the Elk Grove Education Association’s office at 9297 Office Park Circle in Elk Grove. For more information, call (916) 685-4588.
