Florida’s budget solution: Ban the kids

Pondering the budget Gov. Scott sent to the Legislature, I’m overcome with something similar to the sentiment suffered by adults in the lobby of Disney World’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

One admires the soaring thatched ceiling, huge wooden beams, hard-carved furnishings, faux African artifacts and the wild (or at least wildish) animals roaming the grounds, and lament that this could be one of the great hotels.

Except for all the damn, noisy kids.

Same with Florida. Children, in addition to a propensity to whoop in restaurants, pee in swimming pools and clog up the lines at Expedition Everest, have become Florida’s great budget busters. No other

What’s Wrong With Walcott?

by Lynne Winderbaum, retired ESL teacher, JFK HS, and former Bronx High School UFT District Rep

“I’m not going to remove him, but he knows he cannot have any similar type of comments. He is on a very strict line as far as his behavior,” said Walcott, who added that some school staffers want Chase to remain in his post.

Following the deplorable moral standards of his predecessors under Bloomberg, Dennis Walcott staunchly asserts that he will not remove principal John Chase from his leadership position at Bronxdale High School.

I have represented teachers for many years as a UFT chapter leader and district representative. Given the unique position of teachers, the role model status we have, and the damage we can do if we display immoral behavior in

Parents’ Rights in Prince William County Schools

Can parents review the information the public schools hold about them and their children? Can they access their child’s locker? Can the public schools distribute a student’s information outside the local school district without the parents’ consent, for instance to the state or federal Department of Education or other organizations / institutions?

The first, can parents review the information PWCS hoods about their child, is a solid Yes. As a parent with a minor child in PWCS, you can review the information PWCS has about your child. Interestingly, parents are asked whether they’ll waive that right when their child applies for entry to any of district’s specialty programs.

Access to lockers is a different issue as there is no formal policy allowing parents to access their minor child’s locker. That will change if policy # 782 is approved by the school board. That policy reads, “Any custodial parent or legal guardian of a minor or unemancipated Prince William County Schools student shall have access at reasonable times to their

Ed Reform Marches On In Washington State

Lisa Macfarlane, who helped co-found LEV, has moved on and is now the head of Democrats for Education Reform (DFER) with this modest-sounding goal:

"..a political organization focused on encouraging a more productive conversation within the Democratic Party on the need to fundamentally reform public education. DFER operates at all levels of government to educate elected officials and support reform-minded candidates for public office."

Basically, a PAC for ed reform. (One thing that strikes me is all these ed reformer love a new org; I'm thinking it makes it look - to elected officials - like "hey, look at all these groups for ed reform" when it is generally the same 25 people.)

There is a national DFER and it's supported by the infamous Koch brothers as well as Steve Klinsky, a former
