I attended a talk Wednesday night to learn how over 23,000 public school teachers in Chicago have come to the brink of a strike. In the process, I also got a contact high from the intensity of the 200 or so people assembled at the Labor Temple on Park. The talk was delivered by a teacher from Chicago, Becca Kelly. Kelly is a 20-something rank and file member of CTU, perhaps the most mobilized union in the United States at this moment. Of 23,780 Chicago Teachers Union members, 90 percent voted in June to support a strike if the union leadership calls one.
