An NY1-Marist poll of New Yorkers showed a majority want the next mayor to make changes in education. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who abolished the old, unbeloved model of school governance to achieve mayoral control of education policy, billed himself as the “education mayor” when first elected in 2001.
62 percent of New Yorkers want the next mayor “to move in a new direction” on education compared to Bloomberg. [Aidan Gardiner]
56 percent of city voters disapprove of Blomberg’s handling of education. ‘Bloomberg’s numbers have not been that low nice Cathie Black was at the helm of the Education Department.’ [NY1]

You’d think a spat between a local school board and its superintendent would be worthy only of front page status in the local Penny Saver. But when it comes to the fight between the Perth Amboy BOE and Dr. Janine Caffrey, you’d be wrong: thanks to a bizarre set of ads run yesterday by the well-endowed, reformy group B4KNJ, [Rhee's astroturf branch in NJ] this story has grown well beyond a local brawl.
Some background: according to the Star-Ledger, Caffrey has been asked to resign by the PABOE only months into her term as superintendent. The charges the board has brought against Caffrey are:
…failing to meet with school principals, misrepresenting the facts at board meetings, dividing contracts to sidestep the bidding process and bypassing the board to implement teacher-assistance and counseling programs.
