Mr. Mom vs. Mom – Double Standard?

MOTHERS changing the conversation @ www.MothersOughtToHaveEqualRights.org

I got a letter from a reader who was up in the middle of the night stewing over praise heaped on men when they are seen to be caring for their children. Her frustration practically leaps off the screen as she insists mothers don’t get the same public empathy fathers do. This is what she says:

“If you see an exasperated mother with her kids in the grocery store, exhausted, overwhelmed from a full day’s work, picking up dinner, scolding her children for acting out–what opinion do you form? Is it positive? I think probably not. Would she encounter hostility or rolling eyes? Maybe. Probably. ‘Why didn’t she plan ahead?’ you’d wonder. ‘Maybe she shouldn’t be working if…..’

BUT, if you subtract the mother and put the father in her place…..isn’t he glorified? ‘What a hero..he must be

Brent Staples of the NYTimes Editorial Board has put his own unique brand of cynical and disingenuous stupidity on the NCLB waiver plan:
The 2002 No Child Left Behind Act focused the country’s attention on school reform as never before, but the law is far from perfect. The Obama administration is wise to address its flaws, since Congress is four years overdue in updating the law.

The Department of Education’s plan gives states that agree to several reforms — including stringent teacher evaluation systems and new programs for overhauling the worst schools — an exemption from many of the law’s requirements. It would permit the states to change the way they

You know that high performance sports car that you have sitting in the garage? No, not the Mustang; I'm talking about the Jaguar. Sure, Jaguar is a mark of excellence and fine British engineering, but let's face it--Jaguar's are forever needing service and finding parts is a real pain. So what do you do? You can't exactly put Ford Focus parts into a Jaguar.

I imagine working in the admissions department at the University of Phoenix must be a lot like owning a Jaguar. You have this elite university, but where can you get students who are capable of taking advantage of the world class education you can provide? The public schools have failed. That's been clear already by the less than stellar record that University of Phoenix graduates have in the job market. The problem rests with our nation's

#OJshrug

On this day in the year 1995, OJ Simpson was acquitted of all charges related to the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

And it’s not my fault.

I swear. My hands would have fit in those gloves for sure. I still don’t have enough money to hire the late Johnny Cochran. I didn’t even really know who OJ was besides the guy in the commercials and the NFL highlight reels. I don’t remember whether I even thought he was guilty or not, just that it interrupted my watching the New York Knicks flunk against the Houston Rockets in the NBA Finals. I mean, how are you gonna interrupt the first basketball NBA Finals series without Michael Jordan in it in four years? OJ was at least guilty of infringing on the

Teacher Evaluation

By Herman Berliner October 2, 2011 8:29 pm EDT

At all levels of education in the New York area, the key conversation at this moment in time revolves around the APPR (Annual Professional Performance Review) which will beginning now affect New York’s K- 12 teachers and administrators. Be it in public schools or in schools of education, the education community is focused on what APPR means and what the impact will be. Nationwide, the equivalent of an APPR (and a more common curriculum)seems to be in various stages of development . For me, as a long time supporter of comprehensive on-going evaluation of faculty at the higher education level, including student course and teacher ratings, peer observations, ongoing support and feedback, I also support K-12 comprehensive evaluation of teaching .

The major portion of these performance reviews will look a lot like the performance reviews already been taking place continuously in K-12 education. Classroom observations are and will continue to be an important part of this matrix. But there are differences between APPR and what has existed before. An important factor in the new evaluations will be the progress demonstrated by students on standardized state or comparable local examinations. How

Troy Davis Laid to Rest

Following is a statement by Benjamin Jealous, President of the NAACP:

Yesterday Troy Davis was laid to rest.

Thousands joined in to celebrate his life at the Jonesville Baptist Church, and tens of thousands more joined online through the webstream. The power of our global community—united to honor, to stand on convictions and to show respect–was palpable inside the church.

There was little talk of sadness, little mention of grief. The Davis family, compelled by their deep faith, chose to celebrate Troy’s spirit, to honor his life, and to continue to move his mission to abolish the death penalty.

Their strength mirrors Troy’s own. Half of his life was spent behind bars, a captive of a system designed to crush even the mightiest of spirits. But Troy never lost hope. He never lost his faith in God or in his higher purpose.

Sign Ideas for Public Education Supporters at #occupywallstreet

If I could be at Occupy Wall Street I would! I was thrilled to hear the A.F.T. is supporting the movement. Since I cannot be there, I offer inspiration and support through ideas for signs.

Here you go. Please tweet me your ideas and I'll add them to the list!

Learning

Learning is a quest, an adventure, an exploration, NEVER a race

Do we want our schools to produce thinkers?
Or, do we want our schools to rank and sort students

Learning theory is not a mystery.
Teachers know how to facilitate learning in schools.
Listen to the professionals.

Standards

Standards-based reform started with President H.W. Bush questionably tied to MacGraw Hill. Corporate interests stronghold is in the assessments.

Standards are for blueberries, not children.

Standards are not about learning.
Standards are about corporate interests, power, control and money.

Standards have no foundation in learning theory.
Their foundation is from a business model.

Ruport Murdoch sees public schools as a gold mine.
Keep him away from our public schools.
Don't allow digital learning standards.

Standards are not conducive to Constructivist Theory.

Standards are not expectations for students.
They are limitations for learning.

High-Stakes Assessments

Assessments done by the teacher and his/her students are authentic.
A Publishing Giant's assessments are profitable.

Assessments that take weeks to administer filled with students thoughts and reflections are
